MIL-DTL-26482 Series 1&2

MIL-DTL-26482 Connector Standards & Intermateability Guide

Comprehensive Specification Sheet Breakdown, Technical Characteristics & Critical Mating Warning Guidelines

1. Technical Uniqueness of Series 1 and Series 2

The MIL-DTL-26482 specification defines miniature circular environmental bayonet-coupling connectors designed to protect contacts during mating. The specification is divided into two distinct series: Series 1 and Series 2. Each series possesses unique operational ceilings, contact retention mechanics, and environmental class options.

  • Series 1 Connectors (-55°C to +125°C): Utilize solder pot contacts (non-removable, fixed in polychloroprene insert) or front-release removable crimp contacts (SAE-AS39029/31 pin, SAE-AS39029/32 socket). Front-release insertion/removal tools (SAE-AS81969/17 and /19) are required. Environmental classes include Class E (grommet seal), Class F (strain relief clamp), Class P (potted seal), Class J (gland seal for jacketed cable), and Class H (hermetic seal).
  • Series 2 Connectors (-55°C to +175°C / +200°C): Utilize rear-release removable crimp contacts (SAE-AS39029/4 pin, SAE-AS39029/5 socket) operating with rear plastic insertion/removal tools (SAE-AS81969/14). Solder contacts in Series 2 are restricted exclusively to Class H hermetic receptacles (MS3440, MS3442, MS3443, MS3449). Standard environmental classes include Class A (200°C anodized), Class L (200°C electroless nickel, fluid resistant), Class W (175°C olive drab cadmium), Class K (175°C black zinc-nickel), Class T (175°C nickel fluorocarbon), and RFI shielded plugs (MS3475).

2. Critical Intermateability Guidelines & Mating Warnings

While MIL-DTL-26482 Series 1 and Series 2 connectors feature the same 3-point bayonet coupling mechanism and shell sizes, cross-mating between series involves strict engineering limitations and performance de-rating.

CRITICAL SYSTEM INTEGRATION & MATING WARNINGS

• Power Contacts Restriction Only: Mating between Series 1 and Series 2 connectors is permitted ONLY when both counterpart connectors contain a FULL COMPLEMENT OF POWER CONTACTS. Mating connectors containing Size 8 shielded (coaxial) contacts across series is strictly prohibited.• Physical Alignment Prerequisites: Mated connectors must match exact Shell Size (Sizes 8 through 24), Insert Layout Arrangement (conforming to MIL-STD-1669), and Key/Keyway Polarization Position (N, W, X, Y, Z).• Operating Temperature De-rating: When a Series 2 connector (rated 175°C/200°C) is mated with a Series 1 connector (rated 125°C), the maximum allowable hot-spot operating temperature of the assembly is RESTRICTED TO 125°C. Exceeding 125°C will degrade Series 1 seals.• Mechanical Shock & Vibration De-rating: Series 1 is qualified under EIA-364-28 Condition III (10 μs maximum electrical discontinuity), whereas Series 2 is tested under high random vibration (EIA-364-28 VI-J, 1 μs maximum discontinuity). An intermated pair must be de-rated to Series 1 mechanical limits.• CRITICAL TOOLING WARNING: Front-release contacts (Series 1) and rear-release contacts (Series 2) use completely incompatible insertion/extraction tools. Attempting to insert a rear-release tool into a Series 1 front-release insert (or vice-versa) will PERMANENTLY DAMAGE the internal metallic contact retention clips and destroy the moisture seal face.
